The coach programmes 12 repetitions.

At repetition six, the weight begins to feel heavy. At seven, your breathing changes. By repetition eight, your mind has already decided that the set is over. The weight goes down.

Sometimes stopping is exactly the right decision. Technique may be deteriorating, the selected load may be inappropriate, or the body may be communicating pain or unusual discomfort.

But sometimes the body is still capable of continuing, and the mind has simply predicted where the limit is.

Did the body reach its limit, or did the mind predict it?

After coaching hundreds of people, I have seen this negotiation happen more times than I can count. I have also experienced it in my own training and competition.

One shortened set will not stop your progress. Completing every prescribed repetition is not always necessary, and effective training does not require reaching muscular failure in every set.

The issue is not stopping at eight.

The issue is repeatedly stopping at eight without checking whether eight is still your limit.

When the same decision appears across multiple sets, sessions and weeks, it may begin to shape the training stimulus your body actually receives, and, over time, potentially influence progress.

Thoughts do not directly prevent muscles from becoming stronger. But they can influence the weight we select, the pace we maintain, our willingness to attempt something unfamiliar and how quickly we stop when effort increases.

Your coach may write one programme. And your mind may be performing a different one.

The programme your mind performs

A coach might carefully plan progression, but during the workout the mind begins making small adjustments:

  • selecting the familiar weight rather than trying the next one
  • reducing the repetitions as soon as effort increases
  • slowing down at the same point in every run
  • avoiding a more challenging variation
  • stopping before current capacity has been tested

These decisions are not automatically wrong.

Training should respond to the person completing it, not demand blind obedience to numbers written on a page. Research also shows that resistance training does not have to reach momentary muscular failure to produce strength or muscle growth. Repetitions-in-reserve can be a useful way to regulate intensity and manage fatigue (Grgic et al., 2022; Bastos et al., 2024).

The potential problem is not adjustment itself. It is making the same adjustment automatically, without considering whether it is still necessary.

If the planned challenge is repeatedly reduced because of an expectation rather than current physical evidence, the completed training may gradually move away from its intended purpose.

The mind is not directly stopping adaptation.

It may, however, be editing some of the intended challenge out of the programme.

When old evidence sets today's limit

Our expectations do not appear from nowhere.

They are often built from previous experience:

“I failed at this weight before.”
“I always slow down here.”
“I've never been strong.”
“I'm not good at this exercise.”

These beliefs may have been accurate once. They may also have developed after a difficult, painful or embarrassing experience. Using previous experience to guide present decisions is often helpful, as it supports pacing, preparation and protection from genuine risk.

However, training can change physical capacity, while new experiences can also change what we believe we are capable of.

With appropriate and consistent practice, strength increases, the technique can improve, the movement can become more efficient, and recovery between efforts may become faster.

Our beliefs about ourselves do not always update at the same speed.

Sometimes the body has progressed before the belief has caught up.

A coach may notice this before the person does: the familiar weight is moving more comfortably, the technique remains controlled. Recovery between sets has improved, and the signs suggest that the person may be ready for a little more.

The coach introduces the next weight.

The person immediately says: “I can't lift that.”

Not after attempting it. Before touching it.

The statement sounds like a fact, but it also may be a prediction based on old evidence.

When that prediction is never tested, the belief has no opportunity to change, even if physical capacity has already moved beyond it.

When expectation starts influencing behaviour

An expectation of failure can change how someone approaches an exercise. They may become tense, focus more closely on discomfort or interpret normal effort as evidence that something is going wrong. They may rush the movement, lose confidence or stop at the first sign of difficulty.

The outcome can then appear to confirm the original belief: “I knew I couldn't do it.”

A reinforcing pattern begins: I expect to fail → I approach the task differently → I stop early or avoid it → the belief feels confirmed.

This does not mean that physical limitations are imaginary. Muscles still fatigue, and the energy becomes depleted. It is important to remember that training history, health, recovery, and sleep all matter.

The most important point here is that expectations and performance are not completely separate. Expectations can affect how we approach the work, then our approach influences what we do. Finally, what we repeatedly do contributes to the training stimulus we receive.

There is not currently enough evidence to claim that an expectation such as “I can only manage eight” directly causes a training plateau. That connection is an applied coaching interpretation, not an established causal finding.

But the behavioural pathway is worth examining: when expectations repeatedly influence load selection, pacing, effort or avoidance, they may also influence progression.

Difficulty does not mean incapability

The Theory of Challenge and Threat States in Athletes provides one framework for understanding how people approach demanding performance situations.

The theory considers how athletes appraise the demands they face and the resources they believe are available to meet them. Those resources may include confidence, perceived control, experience, physical ability and social support.

In everyday training language, the mind is interpreting the task as either: “This is difficult, but I have resources to respond,” or: “This is difficult, and it is beyond me.”

The revised theory presents challenge and threat as more complex than a simple either-or division. It also acknowledges that evidence for some of its proposed physiological and psychological mechanisms remains mixed. The framework is therefore not a complete explanation of performance, but it offers a useful way to understand why the same physical difficulty may be interpreted differently by different people (Meijen et al., 2020).

The broader evidence provides cautious support for this relationship. An updated 2025 meta-analysis included 62 studies and 7,418 participants across several performance settings, including sport. Challenge states were associated with better performance than threat states, although the overall effects were small (Hase et al., 2025).

Seeing a task as a challenge does not make it easy.

A heavier weight remains heavy. A faster pace still requires effort. The discomfort does not disappear because we have changed our perspective.

What may change is the meaning attached to that discomfort.

“This is difficult because I am working near my current capacity” can support a different response from: “This is difficult because I am incapable.”

The first recognises the demand while leaving room to respond.

The second turns the feeling of effort into evidence of failure.

The conversation happening during the set

At repetition six, self-talk may begin directing attention away from the movement and towards the predicted outcome:

“I'm not going to finish.”
“I shouldn't be this tired.”
“Everyone else is managing better.”
“I always fail here.”

Self-talk is not simply background noise. It can influence attention, confidence and how we respond when effort increases.

A systematic review focused on endurance performance also found consistent support for self-talk as a practical psychological strategy, alongside imagery and goal setting. However, the authors highlighted limitations in the research and the need for more studies involving athletes in genuine competition settings (McCormick et al., 2015).

A meta-analysis of 32 studies found that self-talk interventions had a moderate positive effect on sporting task performance. The effects varied: self-talk appeared more effective for relatively fine or unfamiliar tasks than for well-learned, gross motor tasks, and interventions that included self-talk training were more effective than those that did not (Hatzigeorgiadis et al., 2011).

Helpful self-talk does not need to sound dramatic. You do not have to convince yourself that you are unstoppable. More useful language is often realistic, specific and connected to the immediate task:

  • “One controlled repetition.”
  • “Breathe and reset.”
  • “Maintain the position.”
  • “Finish this repetition, then reassess.”
  • “This is difficult, and I am still in control.”

The aim is not to silence every negative thought or pretend that physical limits do not exist.

It is to prevent an untested prediction from automatically making the decision.

When small edits become a pattern

Training progress is rarely linear.

Programming, recovery, nutrition, sleep, health, stress and the time required for adaptation can all influence progress. Sometimes a plateau is normal. Sometimes the programme needs to change.

Psychological expectations are therefore not the only, or necessarily the primary, explanation.

They may become relevant when they repeatedly influence training behaviour.

A person cannot become familiar with a heavier load if they always reject it before attempting it.

A runner cannot discover whether they can sustain a different pace if they automatically slow down at the same point.

A participant cannot gather new evidence about an exercise if they continue avoiding it.

Again, this does not mean every session must be harder than the previous one. Effective programming includes recovery, lighter sessions and adjustments based on readiness. Stopping short of muscular failure can still produce meaningful adaptation.

Progression is not the same as relentlessly pushing harder.

The concern is not that someone occasionally completes eight repetitions instead of 12. It is that they consistently stop at eight because an old expectation has defined it as the limit.

Repeated often enough, a small psychological edit can become part of the physical programme.

Protection, guidance or underestimation

The mind is not the enemy, and its edits are not automatically unhelpful.

Some protect us. Pain, dizziness, unusual breathlessness, loss of control and significant deterioration in technique should not be ignored in the name of developing a stronger mindset.

Other edits guide us. Reducing the load after poor sleep, adjusting a session during a stressful week or allowing more recovery can be intelligent training decisions.

Some edits, however, may quietly underestimate us. They can be based on fear, habit or evidence collected from an earlier version of our ability.

A good coach does not simply demand more effort or insist that every limit must be broken.

They observe movement, understand the purpose of the exercise and help the person distinguish between:

  • a genuine physical limit
  • an appropriate adjustment
  • an expectation that needs current evidence

Knowing when to adjust is part of becoming a capable athlete.

So is recognising when an old belief is making a decision that no longer belongs to it.

Train & Thrive Reflection: Notice, Test, Update

During your next workout, notice one moment when your mind predicts that you cannot complete the planned task.

Do not automatically obey the prediction. Do not automatically ignore it either.

Notice — Identify the prediction: “I cannot complete another repetition.”

Test — Compare that prediction with the evidence available in the moment. If you experience pain, dizziness, loss of control or significant deterioration in technique, stop or adjust. If the movement remains safe and controlled, test the prediction in one small way:

  • complete one additional good-quality repetition
  • try the next weight for one controlled repetition
  • maintain the planned pace for another 10 seconds
  • ask your coach to observe your technique

Update — After the session, record: what you predicted, what you tested, what actually happened.

Your prediction may be accurate, and you may discover that the weight was too heavy or that your body needed a different approach that day. That is useful information.

But you may also complete a repetition, maintain a pace or lift a weight your mind had already ruled out. That is how beliefs begin to update, through current experience.

The workout your body actually receives

Your mind planning eight repetitions instead of 12 will not, by itself, cause a training plateau.

But if expectations repeatedly determine when you stop, what load you select and which challenges you avoid, they may shape the training your body receives, and your progress more than you realise.

Progress does not require ignoring your body or forcing every repetition.

It requires learning to recognise whether an adjustment is protecting you, guiding you or quietly underestimating you.

Your coach may write the programme, but your mind edits it while you perform it.

Sometimes those edits are based on what your body needs today.

Sometimes they are based on a version of your ability that is no longer accurate.
